Department of Pediatrics

Since the first Pediatrician arrived in Charleston in 1921, the Medical University of South Carolina and the Dr. Charles P. Darby Jr. Department of Pediatrics has been committed to advancing the health of infants, children, and adolescents through innovative medical care, research, training, and advocacy.

With divisions ranked among the top in the nation by US News and World Report, we attract medical students, interns, residents, and postdoctoral fellows by offering training in general pediatrics, critical care and pediatric subspecialties, and challenge trainees to explore and develop their interests through basic science, clinical and community-based research.

With over 450 faculty and staff, our department is one of the largest at MUSC. Our care facilities at Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital offer state-of-the-art primary and specialty care. Our researchers and clinicians collaborate from bench to bedside, transforming their discoveries into the most effective diagnostic, treatment and prevention therapies available today.

Pediatrics continues to optimize our mission: imagining what’s possible for each and every child. We do that by being fully committed to our tripartite mission of taking great clinical care of the patients in front of us, doing meaningful research to make the outcomes of our future patients better, and providing a training environment to replenish the field.
